Hello and welcome to February investing friends. The first month of 2020 is in the books and I get to share my January income with you. I hope everyone had a great month! January is one of my stronger months, I had 18 stocks and 1 ETF pay dividends. I received a total of $680.27 an increase of 9.7% compared to last January the breakdown per account is as follows:
- RRSP $391.93
- TFSA $284.60
- LIRA $3.74
I had three US stocks pay dividends in the month, here is the currency that I received the dividends in. Just a reminder to keep things simple I report the US currency as Canadian that way I don’t have to convert it to Canadian.
- USD $108.31
- CDN $571.96
RRSP
2019 | 2020 | |
BCE | $104.95 | $111.74 |
TC Energy | $100.74 | $110.25 |
Telus | $56.14 | $61.16 |
Altria Group | $48.80 | $52.08 |

BMO International Dividend ETF | $22.23
Inter Pipeline | $36.34 | |
Total | $421.07 | $391.93 |
My income dropped in this month due to my selling of Inter Pipeline and the ETF. Dividend increases from my top five stocks couldn’t overcome the two sells. Next year this account should be back in growth mode.
TFSA
2019 | 2020 | |
Bank of Nova Scotia | $22.95 | $94.50 |

ZCL Composites Inc. | $30.65
Total | $197.03 | $284.60 |
Huge month for my TFSA the income grew 44.4%, new investments into Bank of Nova Scotia, Transcontinental and European Residential Reit had a big impact as well as moving the BMO International Dividend ETF into this account. Another major impact was the drip program from several stocks. There was no special distribution from The Keg this year that is why the income is down a little bit.
LIRA
2019 | 2020 | |
Diversified Royalty Corp | $2.22 | $3.74 |
Total | $2.22 | $3.74 |

As you can see my income continues to grow, I almost had two straight months of over $700. Hopefully next January will see me in the $700 club.
2020 Dividend Goal
For this year I have made a goal of wanting to receive $9,500 in dividends. I plan on investing a lot of money into my TFSA this year so we’ll see what happens. In order to achieve the goal I will need to average $791.67 in income per month. Last month I received $680.27 it moved the needle a little bit.
Stock Purchases
I made two purchases in the month.
- Brookfield Renewable Partners (ticker: BEP-UN) 21 shares
-
iShares Core MSCI All Country World ex Canada Index ETF (ticker: XAW) 1 share
The Brookfield purchase was made for my Tax Free Savings Account and the Exchange Traded Fund was made for my Registered Retirement Account.
Dividend Increases
I got the year started with three raises.
- Canadian Utilities 3%
- Realty Income 3.1%
- Canadian National 7%
These three raises increase my forward income by $13.04.

Hey Matthew,
Looks like you had a fantastic opener for the year. Great to get in that early momentum. We have a common holding in ZDI.
I had a pretty good start to the year as well, which I wrote about on my blog on Friday. Non quarter months tend to be pretty steady on my end.

Thanks!
ZDI makes up a decent chunk of my portfolio. I have a post in the pipeline to talk about what’s in my portfolio of 10 ETFs.

Nice start to the year. Am i reading that right – you bought 1 share of XAW? I assume you have zero fee commissions?

Lol yes you read correctly. I opened an account with WealthSimple Trade they have zero commissions. My plan is to put $100 per month into the account and slowly build up XAW position.

Thanks I agree 100% if the market drops I will just reinvest those dividends at a lower price.

Wow Matthew. That’s a great start to the year. Keep it up. Pitchers and catchers have officially reported. I guess we have to get our trash cans ready and whoop some ass this baseball season.
